How To Take Your Own Photos Yourself Without A Photographer…

How to take your own photos

Recently, I have been getting lots of questions about self-portrait photography [How to take your own photos…]. Firstly, before I jump into this let me give this important advice from my little blogging experience years and struggles with creating visual contents as a blogger:

#Advice – The best thing you can do for yourself as a blogger to remain consistent is investing in photography either that is buying a camera and tripod or negotiating a great deal with a photographer or someone that can regularly take your pictures because that can shape how consistent you can actually be as a blogger or content creator.

So, back to the main topic. When I started blogging I used to take my pictures myself for the first year until I actually got very lazy since I met a photography student/friend who helped me take my pictures monthly for 2 years straight for my blog.

Now that I am no more a student, I have struggled to keep up with blogging [including other reasons] due to lack of images/photographer to regularly help me create images I want.

After 6 months of “Giving excuses”, I have decided to get back to the drawing board and throw any excuse out of the window aiming to stop me from getting images. Back to square 1, I am now back to using my tripod and thankfully my camera has a phone app which allows me to control your camera right there on my phone, saving me the energy to run back-and-forth to pose and click the shutter button.

#Tip 1: Invest in a camera with practical features – This is probably one of the most important thing to do. I currently use a Sony A6000 / Lens: 30mm – 1.8 which allows me to control my camera from my phone with the Sony app. This remote control feature is a lifesaver because it makes taking my own pictures less frustrating. I don’t need to run back and forth to press the shutter button and pose. With this app, I can press the shutter button, control the aperture and set the timer [5 seconds] which gives me time to hide my phone away before posing.

#Tip 2: Find a safe location – Not too quiet [For security purposes] but Not so busy – Location used to be a big problem especially when you live in a big city, it can be difficult to find a quiet but nice area. Don’t over think it and avoid letting that stop you from shooting. I recently found a nice street just next to my house although it’s usually busy then I realised it very quiet on Sundays.

#Tip 3: Plan an easy outfit change process – This is the most challenging of them all for every blogger actually with or without a photographer. Finding a secured place to swith outfit because “Batch shooting” is the way forward. This is an important part of your location scouting which is why I am in love with my current location because it’s just 1min walk away from my flat.

#Tip 4: Practice your poses / plan different photography angles you want to create – After several years now, I surely know my angles and poses but if you are not familiar with taking your own pictures, this is something you want to plan for or practice before your shoot day because it will surely save you a lot of time.

#Tip 5: Snap, Snap, Snap – Just keep snapping and taking as much pictures as you can until you get the perfect ones that will make it to the blog or Instagram. I usually go uptown 15-20 shots now because I am used to taking my own pictures, I know my angles and very sure about my style of pictures. When I started, this would probably take unto 40 shots before actually forcing myself to stop. Just keep snapping because surely, there will be one, if not few to use.

#Extra: Try a different mood and expression. Smile, laugh, give a straight face look……..Just have lots of fun shooting.

Thank you for reading and I hope these tips will be helpful and will make your self-photography easier. Don’t forget to leave any post suggestion below and of-course, I would love to read your feedback. [Instagram: @itsmaryamsalam]

  1. This is such a great content! Inspired to start something. I have always had the thinking that without a photographer, irrespective of the plans, the main goal might actually be though to achieve. When I plan to take not so regular pictures, I always have to inform my best friend weeks ahead, this however still did not guarantee her schedule won’t change. I feel so tired even before starting. Trying to build my page have been a major challenge! What’s the name of the app? Thank you ❤️

Location is a major problem for me, photographer as well, but I’d definitely invest in a tripod
